Our History
Neighborhood School of Dance was founded in 1976 by Michelle Marks. Mrs. Marks’ goal was to offer dance lessons to local residents, specializing in jazz, tap, and ballet. It started by offering classes on Mondays and Tuesdays to children, and even one class for adults. The total number of classes NSD offered in the beginning was nine. Each year NSD has grown, offering a recital every spring. The NSD recital showcases what the students have learned over the course of the year, along with student pieces being submitted through the annual choreography contest.
In 2001 Sue Chohan took over as the Owner and Director. She continued to grow the business by introducing new classes like Hip-Hop and "Twinkle Twos".
Since its beginning days NSD has tripled the classes offered. These classes range by age and type of dance. From the “Twinkle Stars” class, offered to children ages 18m-3yrs up to adult classes. NSD has a wide range of classes to suite the needs of any type of dancer beginner or seasoned! The styles we offer ballet, lyrical, contemporary, pointe, jazz, tap, hip hop, and acrobatics.

The Neighborhood School of Dance has been a staple in Olean, NY for over 35 years. When children and adults come to class at The Neighborhood we encourage the students to venture into a new form of personal expression. “Find your Passion” is not just our slogan, but our goal for every dancer. We encourage all of our dancers to experience and enjoy the various types of dance as they develop the necessary skills to become a talented dancer. With quality training, exciting choreography, entertaining recitals and experienced teachers, The Neighborhood School of Dance offers a fun, friendly atmosphere that any dancer would enjoy.

Today
Today, Brittany Thierman is the owner of NSD calling it her own in July 2013 along side with Kyleigh Peterson as director. Brittany and Kyleigh has been dancing at NSD since they were children. They are so blessed to have their dream jobs and continue to help dancers of all ages find their PASSION.
