LEARN ABOUT COMPETITION

Want to learn more about Competition @ NSD? Here is what you need to know:

  • We compete at 2 competitions each season. You can do one or both.

  • Competitions are normally sometime between February - May.

  • The competitions we attend are mostly in the Buffalo / Niagara Falls area.

  • When we have our competition schedule, we will know which weekend we are competing, but we won’t know which day or time until about 2 weeks ahead of time.

  • Competition can be anytime on Friday Saturday or Sunday. When we get the schedule we will let parents know so they can plan. It can start as early as 7am and end as late as 11pm.

  • Awards will always be the same day as performing, so if you are in one dance you will only need to be at competition one day.

  • Staying at a hotel is optional.

  • NEW THIS YEAR: Once a month, we ask that all competition dancers meet for a 60-minute technique class. This class will be $5 per person, and it is mandatory to attend if you are doing competition. The reason for this is for dancers to get to know each other, and give them extra time to work on technique.

Costs:

  • Entry fees: Entry fees vary per dance and per competition. Solos range from $140-180ish. Duets/Trios are approximately $80/per dancer.

  • Costume: your costume fee will depend on which costume you want. We can order a costume for you or you can find one yourself - with teacher approval.

  • Private lessons: we teach choreography for competitions in private lessons. Lessons are $25/half hour. Scheduling can be up to the teacher and student. You can do weekly/bi-weekly, monthly, etc. Some teachers also prefer to teach a bulk of the choreography over the summer in an “intensive”.

  • Technique class: $5 once a month class.

To get started, the student needs to decide:

  • If they want to do a solo, duet, or trio.

  • What style of dance they want to do (Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Pointe, Contemporary, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Acro, etc)

  • If they have a preference of teacher

  • Narrow down some song ideas (you can work with the teacher on this if you are stuck)
